Bull Wod

"Bull"

Two rounds for time of:
200 Double-unders
135 pound Overhead squat, 50 reps
50 Pull-ups
Run 1 mile

Feeling good that this one is in the books. The Overhead Squats were as bad as I thought they would be. I lost all kinds of time in that movement as John and Bill went through those OHS like they had dowels in their hands not a loaded bar. I felt good on the pullups and was able to get put together decent reps. The run was not very smooth and boy did I just want to walk. Finished in 57:17. First round 27:09, second round 30:08. John absolutely scorched it in 46 minutes and Bill wasnt far behind him. Good effort all around and nice to train with this crew. Glenn gutted it out even though it appeared that he was succumbing to the stomach flu that has taken down his family.

Hero WOD

I have been thinking about the Hero WOD that I am going to do tomorrow. Listed below:
“Bull”
2 Rounds for time of:
200 Double Unders
50 Overhead Squats (135. 95)
50 Pull ups
1 mile Run
Generally I don't think about the workout that much but this one has me a bit spooked. First off the volume is super high and the crossfit Cyborgs (i.e. Derek Mohamed and Harry)took over 50 minutes. I'm especially worried about the double unders. If I cant find my rhythm its going to be brutal. I will be thrilled to get to the run portion so I can do it all again.

This WOD Is a tribute to U.S. Marine Corps Captain Brandon "Bull" Barrett, 27, of Marion, Indiana, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, was killed on May 5, 2010, while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Rest in peace Brandon.

New Year Day WOD

WOD: “2011″
2 rounds for time

11 burpees
11 box jumps 24″
11 knees to elbows
11 push ups
11 air squats
11 kb swings 70#
11 wall balls 20#
11 pull ups
11 double unders
11 thrusters 65#

This WOD was a great way to start the new year. Good size class and got a chance to battle it out. 11:39 Couldn't find my rhythm on the double unders for some reason. Lost time there.

CFE WOD = 15sec on 15 sec off for 5min Recover 3 min Between sets.

Ran on the Biltmore golf course. Crazy cold here today 33 degrees. Did 1 mile warm up and then got after. Screwed up and only did 2 minute recovery. Good workout but could really tell I was tiring in the later half of each set. Went right to gym and did this wod. 2min KBS, 2 min rest, 2 min dips, 2 min jumping lunges with 2 min break in between. Wow this was tougher than I thought. Aprox 100 swings, 40 dips, 48 jumping lunges.

LuLueMon Crossfit

While on trip with the wife to the Biltmore Fashion Plaza (whoever named the placed clearly didn't want it to appeal to men) I noticed that the Luluemon store had a running club and hosted a Crossfit Class on Tuesday. After a week of training solo I thought it would be fun to mix it up. The coach who came to lead the class was Bryon Maxwell who is a coach at Core Crossfit in Phoenix. The WOD was 5 burpees on the minute while doing the following: 1o laps of 150 meter course, 50 sit-ups, 50 push-ups, 50 squats. My time was 15:24. I thought this was going to be easy but those Burpees where enough to really slow you down. Bryon took us through a great warm up and cool down of mobility exercises. I'm going to try to get to his box today or tomorrow.

Celebration

Im at my parents house with my siblings celebrating my Dad's 81st birthday. I think he has a lot of years left if his parents are any indication. His mom lived to 96 and his Dad to 92 those are some nice genes to have inherited. Its been a fun day especially playing with the neices and nephews.

Changing gears - I think we should all be pretty happy with the US National Team winning Concacaf. They have had some bad breaks with Charlie Davis's terrible accident and the inury to Gooch. They have a lot to sort out in the next few months. I for one would love to see Dempsey and Altidore up top. A midfield of Donovan, Bradley, Edu, Holden. In the back it all depends on who is healthy. I would really like to see more of Torres and Benny.

Reading ...and USMNT

Its been awhile since I have posted but my crossfit buddy Kevin Daigle has inspired me. But instead of blogging about crossfit I will share some thoughts on a few books that I read this summer that i thought were truly exceptional. The first one is "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall. This book is interesting even if you are not a runner. It covers anthropology, native diets, native cultures, sociology and ultra runners. I found every chapter a page turner and have listened to several podcast interviews to gleen even more information and stories.

Thinking of stories and story tellers reminded me of the passing of Frank McCourt this summer. Frank McCourt was an incredible story teller and writer. I think what is more important though is the impact that he had on so many students lives. Think about the talent this guy had and how much he was able to share. I wish more people would think about becoming educators versus chasing a buck. In fact if I ever hit it big my idea would be to create a fund that would pay off entire student loan debt in exchange for teaching in a public school for 3-5 years. Im hoping that this would be something that would motivate a few high fliers to make a pit stop in education and maybe never leave. I would hope that it would generate enough interest that we would have to select on the top candidates. Let me know what you all think of that.

Completely changing topics, its only a week away before the final two US MNT World Cup Qualifiers. I would have hoped that Jermaine Jones and Maurice Edu would both been healthy enough to play. Alas that is not going to happen. I hope that Landon can put this team on his back for the last two games and put us through.
